Hey there,
I’m thrilled to share a little story close to my heart – the journey of creating the Workhorse Desk. It all began with a humble invitation to participate in a satellite exhibition during Salone del Mobile Milano. For a furniture designer like myself, this was a moment of quiet excitement mixed with a tinge of nervousness.
Inspired by the everyday hustle and bustle, I embarked on a mission to craft a desk that seamlessly blended functionality with timeless design. Thus, the Workhorse Desk was born – a simple yet elegant piece that speaks volumes in its understated charm.
Throughout the design process, I poured my heart and soul into every detail, ensuring that each element served a purpose. From its clean lines to its eco-conscious construction, every aspect of the desk reflects my deep-seated passion for furniture design.
As I stood among fellow designers and enthusiasts at Salone del Mobile Milano, watching their reactions to the Workhorse Desk, I felt a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to share my passion with the world, and gratitude for the journey that led me to this moment.
But enough about me – I want to share the Workhorse Desk with you.
Designed for DIN Design IN exhibition at Salone del Mobile 2018
The Workhorse was conceived as an attempt to make the everyday office space less mundane and more alive. By combining the linear surface of a desk with the soft, warm curves of equestrian legs the Workhorse was intended to join work with play, office with countryside; to bring the outside in. Rather than being tied to a desk, the user is inspired with the freedom of riding with their thoughts.
Offices and studios are static environments with little movement as most of one’s time is spent sitting. The Workhorse is a free-standing sculpture in the space. With a dynamic posture and one leg forward it is ready to roam the halls of the office at any moment. It also invites you to move around it and use the drawers on either side, to engage with it while it waits patiently for your next task.
The Workhorse was custom made with near perfect horse proportions and rich, solid walnut, stained to match a horse’s sleek coat to maintain a friendly yet formal enough appearance for the office. It is a combination of wood, leather and metal that will provide the reliability of a “beast of burden” with the handsome look of the thoroughbred. The primary material for construction, wood, lends itself to other “breeds” of horses such as an ebony black charger. Just like this Workhorse, others in the limited edition will have gold appointments like gold plated horseshoes in place of the chrome horseshoes on the current workhorse.
It is the stalwart partner and the constant friend; it is a touch of nobility with the air of wide open adventure. The Workhorse calls you to sit with it like a familiar companion or to stand with it as you complete your next task
The desk was made in Italy with superior craftsmanship, no expenses were spared. The legs were carved for 15 day and nights non stop in a 5 Axis CNC machine, and the three-color-gradient paint job, took two and a half weeks process. The walnut is of the highest quality hand picked and book-matched and with metal reinforcement in the construction of the desk it is as strong as a horse. Custom made chromed horseshoe were fitted for additional detail and preserve the wood from wear against the floor surface.
For me, It’s more than just a piece of furniture; it’s a testament to dedication, craftsmanship, and the simple joys of creating something with purpose.
